About me

Hello, and welcome to the Nick Haskell website.

First, a little bit about myself.

I have been following motocross since I was a schoolboy back in the early 60’s. In those days we were literally spoiled for choice as both the BBC and ITV television networks both screened their own ‘Live’ scrambles series throughout the winter months. The top names like Dave Bickers, Jeff Smith, Vic Eastwood, the Rickmans and the Lampkins were all virtual household names due to the level of exposure they got on regular prime time TV each Saturday afternoon.

One of my first memories of the sport was when my parents took me to the traditional season opener, the ‘Hants Grand National’ at Matchams Park nr Ringwood on the outskirts of the New Forest.

At that time the event only carried a National status but it always attracted a top class entry, including the then current World champion Jeff Smith, ex European champion Dave Bickers plus a whole host of other famous stars.

On this particular occasion it also provided me with my introduction into the world of photography, as I had borrowed my father’s bellows camera  for the event.

Unknown to me at the time it was a camera that was totally unsuitable for the task at hand, such as a fast moving sport like scrambling / motocross, but I guess at such a tender age I could be forgiven for my ignorance.

None the less, week after week I persevered and eventually progressed to the stage of processing my films in the school darkrooms.
Since those early days I have had the privilege of covering many major motocross events, including the World Championship Grand Prix’s for the countries top magazine titles.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have witnessed and captured for posterity many memorable moments from the World championship winning campaigns of Graham Noyce, Neil Hudson and Dave Thorpe. They were great times and a lot of fun was had on the way.

One of my biggest regrets was that at the time the newspapers required only black and white images for speed purposes, and therefore not enough colour material was captured.

It is fair to say I have therefore acquired a great number of images from what is often described by many as the ‘Golden Years’ or ‘Heyday’ of motocross, which I am currently in the process of converting to a digital format.

I hope to share many of these memorable images with you on this site in the not too distant future.

I hope you enjoy your visit.

Yours in sport

Nick
